While I agree wholeheartedly with the meaning behind this song, when it comes to the topic of colonization, it's tragic how the US overthrew Hawai'i, no doubt about that - the Hawaiians suffered badly. But, if it hadn't been the US, it would have been China, Russia, or even North Korea - some country would have colonized Hawai'i, and if it had to be someone, thank God it was the US, because Hawai'i would have zero freedoms under those other regimes. I think people need to remember that. Hawaiians are entitled to freedom of speech, freedom of religion, the right to defense (although the Democrats in charge of Hawaii have taken that away) and the freedom to live the way you want to. Hawaiians need to be grateful for that, at the very least. If anything, I think a concerted effort to keep Hawai'i Hawaiian in terms of culture and language is a great thing. I've seen cheesy hula shows at the Polynesian Center, and bobbleheads of hula dancers being sold in souvenir shops in Honolulu, and I understand that it's because of tourism and shop owners need to make money, but the change needs to come from within. Everyone - Americans, tourists, and even Hawaiians - need to make sure Hawaiian culture is not reduced down to the tiki aisle at Party City. It has to be a team effort. This song is a fantastic start.
